Daniel Reidy

Founder/Reidy Law Group

Of-Counsel/CMPR

Upon receiving his J.D. from the University of San Francisco, Dan began his legal career at Owen Wickersham & Erickson as an intellectual property attorney.  An entrepreneur at heart, in 1990 Dan started his own practice and never looked back.

Dan has represented hundreds of clients in intellectual property litigation and transactions.  One notable case was a copyright infringement class action case on behalf of freelance authors against a major magazine publisher’s subsidiary for selling thousands of authors’ individual articles without their permission. After several years of hard-fought litigation and favorable rulings at both the Federal District Court and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, Dan negotiated a multi-million dollar settlement that resulted in significant payments to hundreds of infringed authors and ushered in a new era of how publishers could use authors’ works.

Before relocating his practice from San Francisco to St. Helena in 2008, Dan’s intellectual property practice focused on the acquisition and licensing of highly valuable exclusive creative content for Fortune 100 clients from such artists as The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Prince, Taylor Swift, U2, The Police and many more. As a result of these valuable content acquisitions, client’s sales of content branded products exceeded $100 million.

Since 2008, Dan has represented many of Napa and Sonoma’s finest wine brands and primarily focuses on wine industry sales and acquisitions, the development and protection of clients’ intellectual property, and general wine industry business transactions. Carle Mackie power & ross, LLP (“CMPR”)

In early 2023, after a decade of working together as co-counsel on several high-profile wine industry transactions, Reidy Law Group entered into an “of counsel” relationship with the Santa Rosa based law firm Carle Mackie Power & Ross LLP (“CMPR”). Under this arrangement, Reidy Law Group continues to operate at the St. Helena Office under the CMPR umbrella giving it full access to the firm’s considerable resources which includes nearly 40 attorneys and supporting staff. The combined firms now offer legal services in expanded areas of law most often needed by its winery clients, including alcohol compliance, land use, employment/labor law, and tax matters. CMPR also provides extra horsepower in litigation and large complex winery sales and acquisitions transactions.

The arrangement resulted in the merger of the CMPR and Reidy Law Group intellectual property practices creating one of the country’s largest wine and alcohol beverage trademark portfolios. With its trademark attorneys having a combined experience of over 50 years and the support of three intellectual property paralegals, CMPR/RLG is a formidable force in the world of trademark law.
